Technical Bulletin: Corrugated Edge Protectors

Purpose

This technical bulletin provides an overview of corrugated edge protector design, performance characteristics, and application considerations for palletized and unitized loads.

It is intended to support evaluation, specification, and implementation decisions in packaging, material handling, and logistics environments.

Edge Protectors as Structural Components

Corrugated Edge Protectors serve two primary functions:

  1. Protection of Product Edges
  2. Structural Reinforcement of Palletized Loads

When Properly selected and applied, edge protectors can act as vertical load-bearing elements, transferring compressive forces through the protector rather than into the product.

This improves load stability, stackability, and resistance to deformation during storage and transport.

Corrugation Orientation

Horizontal Corrugation orientation is the standard configuration for corrugated edge protectors

In this orientation:

  • Corrugation runs parallel to the pallet deck
  • Edge Protectors provide effective edge protection
  • Performance is suitable for most strapping and stretch-wrapping applications

Horizontal orientation is appropriate for standard palletized loads where primary requirements are edge protection and load containmnet.

Vertical Corrugation orientation is a custom configuration used when additional column strength is required.

In this orientation:

  • Corrugation runs perpendicular to the pallet deck
  • Compressive load transfer is significantly increased
  • Edge Protectors function more directly as vertical load columns

Vertical Corrugation is commonly used in:

  • Heavy or Uneven Loads
  • Unitized Products lacking inherent rigidity
  • Stacked Pallet Configurations
  • Applications requiring maximum column strength

Profile Thickness and Construction

Edge protector performance is influenced by:

  • Overall Thickness
  • Number of Layers
  • Fold Geometry
  • Corrugation Orientation
  • Paper Grade

Standard profiles may include lighter-duty configurations for basic protection, while heavier profiles are designed to support increased loads and higher strap tension.

Changes in thickness or construction outside standard profiles are considered custom configurations and are evaluated based on application requirements.

Impact Resistance & Handling Protection

Corrugated edge protectors provide inherent advantages over solid fiber components by offering:

  • Puncture Resistance
  • Cushioning
  • Shock Absorption

These properties help reduce localized damage from:

  • Forklift contact
  • Handling impacts
  • Strap and Band pressure
  • Transit Vibration

In heavy-duty applications, reinforced profiles help protect products during aggressive handling and mechnical movement.

Patented Multi-Layer / Multi-Fold Design

Certain edge protector profiles utilize a patented multi-layer, multi-fold construction.

This design:

  • Reinforces the corner geometry
  • Improves resistance to compression and impact
  • Enhances rigidity without excessive material use

The folded structure distributes loads across multiple layers, improving durability during handling and transport.

At Tuff-Angle, we have our products rigorously tested to ensure they meet the highest standards of protection. Our strength testing results demonstrate the superior durability and impact resistance of Tuff-Angle edge protectors compared to competitors. Product Raw Data Sheet Summary

Vertical Flute Construction

Vertical Flute Orientation supports vertical stacking loads far better than horizontal flute designs used by most commodity protectors.

Higher Compression Resistance

Tuff-Angle heavy-duty profiles exceed 1300 lbs of compression strength, outperforming most standard market options.

Better Strap & Banding Performance

Higher compression strength means less edge crush under strap tension — protecting both product and packaging.

Reduced Freight Damage

Stronger corners improve pallet integrity, reduce shifting, and minimize impact damage during transit.

Optimized Strength-to-Cost Ratio

Tuff-Angle Edge Protectors deliver industrial-grade protection without unnecessary material waste or inflated pricing
