Heavy Duty Edge Protectors

Structural Protection for Demanding Palletized Loads

Heavy-Duty Corrugated Edge Protectors are used when standard profiles are not sufficient to support load wieght, strap tension, stacking, or handling conditions. They are designed to function not only as protective components, but as structural elements that help unitize, stabilize, and reinforce palletized loads.

When Heavy-Duty Edge Protectors are Required

Heavy-Duty profiles are commonly used when:

  • Loads are Heavy or Uneven
  • Strap or Stretch-Wrap Tension is High
  • Pallets are stacked in storage or transit
  • Products lack sufficient structural rigidity
  • Additional column strength is required at pallet corners

In these applications, heavier profiles provide increased rigidity and load-bearing performance.

Structural Unitization and Load Support

Heavy-Duty Edge Protectors can act as vertical load columns when applied at pallet corners.

This allows compressive forces to be transferred through the edge protector rather than into the product, improving:

  • Load Stability
  • Stackability
  • Resistance to Deformation

In some applications, edge protectors enable multiple items to be unitized into a single, stable pallet load.

Vertical Corrugation Orientation

Heavy-Duty Edge Protectors may be manufactured with vertical corrugation alignment, which significantly increases column strength.

Vertical Orientation:

  • Improves Compressive Load Transfer
  • Enhances Performance under Sustained Stacking Pressure
  • Increases Rigidity in Demanding Storage and Freight Environments

This configuration is commonly selected for High-Load or Long-Duration applications.

Puncture Resistance, Cushioning, and Shock Abosrption

Unlike solid fiber or rigid packaging components, Corrugated Heavy-Duty Edge Protectors provide:

  • High Puncture Resistance
  • Cushioning and Shock Absorption
  • Energy Dissipation Under Impact

This combination helps protect products during handling, transport, and storage by reducing the transmission of force to vulnerable edges.

Forklift and Handling Impact Protection

The 1.0625″ Heavy Duty Profile features a patented triple-fold design constructed from triple-layer, double-wall corrugated material

This design provides exceptional resistance to:

  • Forklift Entry and Exit Impacts
  • Corner Contact during Handling
  • Localized Point Loads

The reinforced corner geometry absorbs and distributes impact forces, helping protect the product during mechanical handling.

This impact resistance is inherent to the design and is effective in both standard (horizontal) and vertical corrugation configurations.

Replacement of Traditional Outer Packaging

In certain applications, heavy-duty edge protectors have replaced traditional outer packaging systems.

When combined with stretch wrap and banding, they can:

  • Unitize Products without cartons or boxes
  • Reduce Packaging Materials and Labor
  • Simplify Packaging Operations
  • Lower Total Packaging Cost

In these scenarios, the edge protector functions as a primary structural packaging component

Heavy-Duty Profile Options

Common Heavy-Duty Selections Include:

  • .750″ heavy duty
  • 1.0625″ heavy duty

The 1.0625″ profile is typically selected when:

  • Maximum Column Strength is Required
  • Loads must be Unitized without Traditional Packaging
  • Handling conditions are Severe
  • Stackability and Rigidity are critical

Evaluate Under Real Conditions

Heavy-Duty Edge Protectors are best evaluated under actual load and handling conditions.

Applying protectors to representative pallet loads allows users to assess rigidity, stability, and performance before full implementation.
